The aim of the agreement is to ensure that the Nordic countries have access to the same types of ammunition. A joint certification process will enable them to procure ammunition collectively.
The document is part of a broader effort to further deepen Nordic cooperation. Interoperability and joint procurement processes will enhance supply security across the entire Nordic region.
On Tuesday, March 4, Finnish Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen visited Denmark, where he, along with his Danish counterpart Troels Lund Poulsen, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation in the areas of deterrence and NATO defense implementation, as well as naval cooperation, the use of F-35A Lightning II multirole aircraft, military exercises and training, and the procurement of weapons and ammunition.
“Denmark is an important ally for Finland, and its role in ensuring security of supply in the Baltic Sea and military mobility is significant for Finland. Finland’s transition to the same NATO Joint Force Command in Norfolk as Denmark further strengthens our cooperation. Additionally, it provides new opportunities for collaboration in developing NATO’s deterrence and defense,” said Minister of Defense Antti Häkkänen.
Earlier, on January 31 of this year, Minister Antti Häkkänen announced the launch of a project to build a new TNT explosives production plant in the town of Pori, located in the Western Finland province on the coast of the Bothnian Bay. The investment is valued at over 200 million EUR, and the facility will be operated by the Finnish company Forcit Oy Ab, with which a Letter of Intent (LoI) has been signed regarding the project. This will be the second such plant in the EU, following Nitro-Chem Chemical Plants in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Previously, Sweden and Denmark jointly ordered new batches of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), and in October last year, reports emerged that the governments of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland were in talks regarding a potential joint procurement of next-generation infantry fighting vehicles.
It is also worth noting that in 2020, these countries agreed to implement a unified military uniform in the coming years, and in March 2023, they decided to establish joint Nordic air forces.
