IWA and EnforceTAC 2018: Novelties from Nuremberg

EnforceTac police-military show and civilian IWA OutdoorClassics surprise us with diversity each year. Both shows, happening one after the other, has been taking place in the same exhibition centre in Nuremberg for years now. The event also inaugurates the shooting season in Europe. Each year, at the start of March, exhibitors from all over the world present weapons, tactical gear and special vehicles.

Organizers differentiate the target groups very strictly. The EnforceTac is a show for uniformed formations, military and paramedics. This year, for the first time, the equipment and armament were presented in 3 exhibition halls. Unfortunately, the expansion wasn`t publicised properly, so most visitors didn`t know about the extra 3rd hall until they stumbled upon it by chance, usually towards the second day of EnforceTac. The lack of information irritated the exhibitors located in the newest space. IWA OutdoorClassics was open for general public, so every shooting and outdoor enthusiasts could see the novelties from around the world. This year`s edition didn`t disappoint. Booths filled pretty much every available space of the Messe exhibition centre. For quite a few years now IWA rivals the American SHOT Show when it comes to the size. 2018 Nuremberg exhibition gathered 1558 expositors in 11 halls.

SIG Sauer Range Days

For quite some time, the biggest difference between SHOT Show at IWA was the lack of available shooting range. Media and distributors could not check the firearms in their natural environment – at the shooting range. This year, SIG Sauer decided on a change. Germans managed to find a well-hidden range just a couple hundred of meters from the show`s entrance. The venue was interesting, historical, one can say. The range is located in the underground tunnel build to facilitate foot traffic under the old marching avenue.

In the seventies, few of the local shooters decided to adopt the wide corridor for the shooting range purpose. The result is a well hidden, quiet place available to members only. There are no signposts or markings and finding the spot is a challenge. Even the noise is effectively countered by the traffic flow on the old marching avenue. This place was the venue for the first IWA Range Days, organized by SIG Sauer. Each day chosen guests were ferried by van to the range. The activity took about an hour and novelties from the show were presented.

One of the firearms available at the SIG Sauer Range Days was the P365 compact handgun. According to the SIG Sauer representative, it became quite a hit at the show. Initially, it was destined for the American market and European distributors were to receive trace quantities of the said weapon. After a barrage of questions, requests and orders from European resellers, SIG Sauer decided to increase the number of P365s` for the European market to a dozen or so thousands. The pistol will reach the shelves in 2018.

P320 RX, P226 RX and P226 X-Five Production Optics were also presented at the range. The last one mentioned has a slide compatible with IPSC Production Optics division optoelectronic sights. The competition SIG Sauer 1911 MAX Full-Size also gathered quite a lot of interest. The weapon was made according to recommendations from Max Michael. SIG Sauer also presented 5,56-mm, semi-automatic MCX Virtus rifles with 292- and 411-mm barrels and the MPX Carabine. The offer was supplemented by pneumatic weapons such as X-Five ASP.

SIG Sauer plans to introduce pneumatic variants of most of their products. Germans also presented the signal variant of P320 pistol for 9 mm P.A.K. ammunition. Optoelectronic equipment from SIG Electro-Optics is still being promoted with the Romeo1 1×22 sight being the novelty this year.

B&T New Releases

B&T semi-automatic APC308 had its premiere in Nuremberg. The weapon is to reach the markets in the 3rd quarter of 2018 and is another iteration of Advance Police Carabine family. Until now APC9 submachine gun and APC223/APC556 and APC300 were developed for 9 mm x 19, 11,45 mm x 23/.45 APC, 5,56 mm x 45/.223 Remington, 7,62 mm x 35/.300 Blackout and .300 Whisper ammunition.

The Swiss idea is to develop a line of firearms which have similar construction and almost identical manipulators. This will lessen the training time and costs and enable the shooter to utilize firearms from the same family without lengthy familiarization process. From the logistical side, 60% of components of the Advance Police Carabine family is exchangeable.

APC firearms have an aluminium alloy upper receiver and polymer lower receiver. The barrel housing is attached to the upper receiver by 6 bolts – this speeds up barrel replacement. Buttstocks are exchangeable between the APC family members. Two models of APC308 were shown in Nuremberg. The 330- mm barreled version with a monolithic upper receiver and the 480-mm barreled model with separate handguard and 420-mm accessory rail. Firearm action is based on short-stroke piston moved by gases exhausted from a side barrel opening.

APC308 has the length of 662 mm with butt stock shortened and 875 mm with fully deployed. The marksman variant is 813 and 1025 mm accordingly. The shorter barrel version weights 4,6 kg and the longer one 5,3 kg. The fire selector and bolt carrier release are present on both sides. The charging handle is guided by cutouts in the lower receiver and can be adjusted for right- and left-handed shooters.

The firearm is equipped with a muzzle device compatible with normal and suppressed shooting. The barrel can accommodate the Rotex-IIA suppressor, produced by B&T. There are various butt stocks available – folding, adjustable or dedicated for a precision variant. Buttstock housing is equipped with recoil reduction system comprising of a hydraulic bumper.

Another Swiss novelty presented in Bavaria was the USW-P 9-mm, striker- fire pistol. The weapon was shown in both normal and USW-SF variants. The latter one is a part of Universal Service Weapon family. Comparing to the USW-A1 presented in 2016, the weapon has an almost identical slide with symmetrical protrusions located just before the ejection opening. USW-P has a 2-part frame made of aluminium alloy and polymers. Universal accessory rail is located under the barrel.

The base model is supplemented by USW-SF with an elongated rear of the frame, which creates a buttstock housing. Buttstock is made of polymer and is foldable to the right. The rear of the housing has a base for Aimpoint Nano optoelectronic sight. In this model, the barrel is 126 mm long has external threads for suppressor mounting. USW-SF measures 259/479 mm long and 41/44 mm high. The pistol`s weight, including the magazine, is 1190 g. The additional stock release button is located on the right, in a dedicated opening. To speed the stock unfolding up, a spring-loaded pin is placed in the stock housing. When the release is pressed it pushes the stock out.

Both base and SF versions can be fed by 10-, 17-, 19- and 20-round magazines, exchangeable with USW-A1.

Swiss company also presented the B&T USW-320 model. It`s an exchangeable, polymer receiver with a buttstock housing compatible with SIG Sauer P320. When modified, it can also be used with the (X)M17, chosen by the US Armed Forces. With the receiver exchanges, the weapon gains a foldable stock, universal accessory mount. and becomes a member of USW family.

Heckler & Koch

Heckler & Koch, the German manufacturer of firearms, presented the HK416A7 carabine at the EnforceTAC show. This firearm was chosen in the October 2017 for Kommando Spezialkräfte (KSK) and Kommando Spezialkräfte Marine (KSM) soldiers under the G95 designation. There were 1745 carabines ordered and the contract was valued at EUR 20 million. In November 2017, H&K delivered 40 of HK416A7 for trials i n Wehrtechnischen Dienststelle 91 (WTD91) and in KSK and KSM units. After the tests are completed and their results accepted, the remaining deliveries are to start in January 2019 and finish in June 2019. G95 will replace the G36KA1/A2/A4 used currently by the commandoes.

HK416A7 weights 3,69 kg and has a 368-mm/14,5-inch barrel. The front side base is foldable and fitted to the barrel. The rear sight is placed at the end of the top accessory rail. Compared to previous HK416 models, the gas regulator was moved and resides in front of the handguard. G95 is coated with an earth- like colour and not in the previously used RAL8000 tan. German soldiers requested the fire selector to have a 45 degrees step (as in G36). Previous HK416 has 90 degrees. The firearm is equipped with a new, lighter handguard with a NAR (NATO Accessory Rail, STANAG 4694) mounting rail. It`s located on the top and the bottom of the handguard. The sides have HKey (H&K own system) mounting points.

MILMAG Military Magazine found out that Rheinmetall backed out from the proceedings for procurement of successor of G36 (the System Sturmgewehr Bundeswehr (SSB) programme) for economical reasons. At present, only two companies remain – H&K with new HK433 and C.G Haenel with MK556 Gen 2.

HK 433 is a combination of G36 and HK416 attributes. Two models with different barrel lengths ( 279 mm/11 inches and 368 mm/14,5 inches) were shown in Nuremberg, both in conformance with SSB requirements. H&K decided to stay with G36 manipulator locations. This forced the charging handle to be moved towards the front and above the handguard. This change also makes fitting the optoelectronic sights a bit easier. Other changes included the use of single, coaxial magazine release ocated behind the magwell and cloning of fire selector lever. Additional bolt carrier release is located on both sides, above the front of trigger guard.

The firearm is equipped with the folding buttstock. It folds to the left, has an adjustable butt and a cheek pad. The upper receiver is made of aluminium alloy, lower is polymer. The pistol grip is a separate component and compatible with AR platform. The upper receiver is monolithic and has a long NAR accessory rail. Handguard has a single NAR rail and seven HKey mounting points. These are compatible with an underslung grenade launcher.

To make sure weapon is fed properly, H&K developed an HK Gen 3 polymer magazine. It`s distinctive feature – chevron-shaped opening – enables for easy ammunition checks. The magazine is AR compatible and fits HK416 also. It`s top is shaped like the Magpul PMAG 30 AR/M4 GEN3 magazine.

Haenel CR 308 for uniformed services

Haenel Defence CR 308 7,62-mm semi-automatic rifle debuted in Nuremberg. Fed by 7,62×51 mm ammunition is an extension of CR225/556 line for 5,56×45 mm / .223 Remington ammunition. The firearm will be available in a few weeks time.

CR 308 is an AR system weapon. It uses short stroke piston powered by gases exhausted by a side-placed barrel port. German developers put a lot of pressure on ergonomics and functionality improvement. Interestingly, the return mechanism sleeve serves as a buttstock guide. Moreover, the diameter of the tube is exactly the same as in the 5,56×45 mm AR-15 MIL-SPEC assault rifles.

Haenel Defence weapon has a range of features rarely seen in similar models. Manipulators (fire selector, bolt carrier release and magazine release) are doubled on both sides of the rifle. Fire selector can travel is 45, 60 and 90 degrees steps. This can be decided by the buyer. At the EnforceTac 60 degrees version was presented. The bolt carrier catch requires a special note. Normally (a weakness of AR platforms) to capture the bolt carrier in the rear position, shooters hand has to move from the pistol grip to the left side of the charging handle.

With CR 308, the hand can remain on the grip while shooter can use the index finger to actuate the locking action. The left side of the release is covered to protect against accidental bolt carrier release. The left side of the lever itself is also enlarged. This highly improves the comfort of locking the bolt carrier in the rear position.

Not many AR system manufacturers utilize a quickly detached handguard. On CR 308 removal of the handguard requires only pressing of two locks, located on its sides. This enables the handguard to slide off the mounting. This system is an updated version of one found in Haenel CR223. The handguard is equipped with two NAR accessory rails located on top and bottom. Sides have KeyMod mounting points.

CR 308 can be equipped with a stock, single-stage trigger with 28-35 N pull or a double-stage 17-20 N mechanism. The cold-forged barrels are available in 14,5 inches/368 mm, 16,5 inches/420 mm, 18 inches/457 mm and 20 inches/508 mm. Twis rate is 305 mm (1: 12 inches). The military variant will be sold in earth colour. Civilians will have only black to choose from. Depending on the model, mass is 4,3 to 4,6 kg. The rifle has a gas regulator, completely hidden in the handguard. Adjustment torx tool is located in the QR buckle of the sling. The same tool is also used for KeyMod attachments.

Polish Haenel`s Defence distributor for uniformed services is Cenzin. It`s worth noting that CR223 semi-automatic rifle was also presented at EnforceTac. CR223 is a civilian variant of MK556 Gen 2, offered and G36 successor to Germany`s System Sturmgewehr Bundeswehr programme.

Suprising MWT MAWS

Austrian MAWS (Modular Army Weapon System) for 5,56×45 mm ammunition had its premiere at IWA trade fair in Nuremberg. The display included prototypes in various versions, differing in barrels, stocks, and bodies. MAWS was created by Stefan Madritsch, the founder and head designer of Madrtisch Weapon Technology. Work on the system started in 2015 and development process was aimed towards proceedings for procurement of weapons by Austrian Police special units.

According to the Owner, MAWS system carabines were designed in cooperation with serving and retired officers of Austrian special forces, and after a thorough study of existing weapon systems. MILMAG was informed by Stefan Madritsch, that semi-automatic variant should be available for civilian markets around the beginning of 2019. Further, plans include 7,62×51 mm version.

MAWS is constructed in a surprisingly simple and original way. Carabines operation is based on combustion energy exhausted by a side barrel opening right onto a long-travel gas piston. Upper receiver and body are made of aluminium profiles and the lower receiver is an injection-moulded polymer.

All weapon`s manipulators are either located on both sides or, like the bolt carrier group release button, on the firearm`s long axis. The release, for example, is located inside the trigger guard. Cocking handle is doubled and the handle itself is stationary during shooting. It is also shaped to serve as a forward assist as well. Levers, magazine release buttons, and bolt carrier release button are all within the reach of the index finger of the hand holding the carabine`s grip.

MAWS family for 5,56×35 mm ammunition will be available with 11-, 12,5-, 16-, 18-, and 20-inch barrels. The barrel can be changed rapidly. Do it, two locks located on either side of the upper receiver, have to be unlocked. Then it`s just a case of pressing two buttons and the barrel slides out.

The firearm is surprisingly simple to take apart. First, a coupler joining the stock`s base with the upper receiver has to be removed. This also unlocks the lower receiver. Next, the chassis is removed, followed by the lower receiver and the bolt carrier group. Removal of the barrel, body and two charging devices completes the disassembly process.

Bolt carrier group resembles the solution used in Steyr AUG and SIG MCX. It`s a frame, terminating on one side with a changeable piston, which size is selected based on the barrel`s length. Two rods carry the return springs. Below, a swivel-lock bolt is located.

The weapon can easily be modified for FX ammunition. Removal of the piston and replacement of the bolt completes the process. Thanks to this solution, when using Simunition piston ammo, the whole assembly works like a floating bolt.

MAWS system has a lower receiver compatible with various trigger groups. A quick-change version developed by the MWT can be used, so can be the numerous commercial solution used in AR-10/AR-15 platforms. Due to the local restrictions, the safties presented were of the push-type. There is no problem, however, with using a wing-type safety/ fire selector switch.

Similar is the case with presented stocks. Due to local regulations, the folding stock was shown in a closed, glassed showcase. The stock can be folded to either side of the weapon. Other presented stocks included fixed types with adjustable cheek-pad and special rod-style stock for use with visor-equipped helmets. An adapting sleeve for AR-15 stocks was also shown.

ZMT in Nuremberg

Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów (ZMT) was the only Polish firearms manufacturer present at the IWA in Nuremberg. They were promoting their bullpup bolt-action rifles. Presented firearms included their known 308 ZMT HS rifle for 7,62×51 mm/.308 Winchester ammunition (modified Bor military rifle) and the new Alex-338 for 8,6×70 mm/.338 Lapua Magnum rounds. The last one was serving a role od 338 ZMT HS demonstrator.

As MILMAG Military Magazine found out, both firearms are also offered on the American market. 308 ZMT HS already passed the initial ATF checks. According to Americans, the weapon has…too aggressively looking pistol grip. To pass this requirement, American versions will probably be delivered with a less aggressive wooden grip made of light timber.

XTR-12 i UT-9S in Poland

Variety of firearms on the Polish market is still increasing. As MILMAG found out, a large batch of semi-automatic weapons from Turkish UTAS will be available shortly. Initially, it will be mostly variants of XTR-12 semi-automatic 12 gauge shotguns, UT-9S 9x19mm carabines and UT-5S 5,56×45 mm rifles. Milicon will be the main distributor in Poland.

The UT-9S will a novelty. It works on blowback basis with a closed bolt. UT- 9S is manufactured in 3 variants: UT- 906 (152 mm/6 inch barrel), UT-908 (203 mm/8 inch barrel) and UT-912 (300 mm/12 inch barrel). The general design resembles the AR-15 platform. The firearm has an upper receiver with a barrel and handguard, and a lower receiver equipped with an adjustable stock. Identically to American firearms, both parts are made of aluminium. The pistol grip is compatible with AR platform.

UTAS also copied the manipulators. The t-shaped charging handle is located at the top of the lower receiver and the bolt release controls are placed on the sides of the lower receiver. This allows for use of 17-round magazines from a G17 model and long, 33-round magazines. The UT-912 with a 300 mm barrel wights 2,5 kg and has a length of 720/810 mm in butt stock`s end positions. According to the manufacturer, the projected lifetime of the mechanical parts is 20.000 rounds while the barrel can withstand 15.000 shots. UT-9S is offered in black, green and earth colour.

XTR-12 semi-automatic 12 gauge shotgun is an interesting creation, designed to look like an AR weapon system. The weapon is gas-operated with a short- stroke piston. It has a rotating bolt locking system. Turkish shotgun uses 2-, 5-, and 10-rounds box magazines.

XTR-12 is light for a semi-automatic shotgun for 12/70 and 12/76 ammunition. It weighs only 3,8 kg. Both upper and lower receiver are made of PA9 (7075-T6) aluminium alloy and the bolt is made of 40HM steel (4140 hardness AISI). UTAS estimates the lifetime at 12.000 shots minimum. 510-mm barrel is made of 4140 steel. The chrome-treated barrel should be good for 15.000 shots. Barrel`s end has an internal thread enabling the use of chokes.

The manipulators are located in the same places as in the AR-15. To charge the weapon, the shooter has the use of the T-shaped charging handle located on the top of the upper receiver. The safety lever is thumb-operated and duplicated on both sides. Same happened with the magazine release button. Bolt carrier group is locked in rear position when the magazine becomes empty. The release is same as in AR-10/AR-15.

XTR-12 has an aluminium handguard equipped with a long Picatinny rail. Shorer rails are attached to both sides and the bottom of the guard. KeyMod points are also present. The shotgun comes with an adjustable, 7-step buttstock. Weapon`s length is 998 mm to 1077 mm. Available colours include Cerakote coating in black, green, tan, brown or grey.

AERO Precision

AERO Precision company was started in 1993 and specialized in manufacturing of precision parts, also for the aviation and armament industry. Only in 2014, the production of their own AR-based firearms stated. In time, the company also introduced a range of their own solutions.

The company presented a dozen or so of the M4E1 variants. Our attention was caught by the details of the lower receiver. Rifles have cloned magazine release, 45-degrees safety and an integrated trigger guard. The mag well is widened and a bolt is used to attach the locking lever. Another invisible bolt adjusts the lower/upper receiver joint and cancels the clearance between two parts. Another bolt was introduced instead of a connector for the forward assist lock.

AERO Precision novelty is a light ATLAS S-One handguard for AR-15 rifles. It`s offered in 7, 9, 12 and 15 inches long with M-LOK and KeyMod mounting points. The external diameter of the handguard is 38,6 mm (1,5 inches).

To further reduce the weight of the ATLAS S-One, top mounting rail was reduced to 2 short lengths. Left, right and the bottom have the KeyMod/MLOK mounts. AERO Precision also developed the ATLAS (AERO Tapper Lock Attachment System) solution to speed up the mounting process. The guard is additionally stabilized by two ribs interfacing with the upper receiver.

The M1911 pistol had a lot of reincarnations. Similar to AR-15, the production rights belonged to US Army. This resulted in it being produced by a variety of manufacturers. Wilson Combat is one of these producers and presented their compact EDC X9 model in Nuremberg.

Development of the scaled-down EDC 9 started in March 2015. First 3 prototypes of the EDC X9 pistol were shown at the start of last year. At the time, Wilson Combat presented the weapon with a 102 mm/4 inch barrel fed by 9×19 mm ammunition stored in a 15-round magazine.

Five hundred pistols were manufactured by the August 2017. The first batch sold out fully.

The weapon will be available again in April 2018. Pre-sale price on the American market is 2895 dollars. This makes it one of the expensive everyday- carry pistols. EDC X9 does not have a characteristic grip safety. It was replaced by w normal safety and a 1,8 kg trigger. Front and rear of the slide have an X-shaped indent to help with charging. The frame is aluminium so the pistol weights 830 g empty. EDC X9 is available in grey and shades of brown.

Pistol grip covers are replaceable. To change those top side of the grip has to be unmounted. This part is available in 2 sizes and removes the necessity for bolts holding the grip covers.

Premieres from CZ

During the press conference, CZ informed about an introduction of two CZ Optic Ready pistols: the P-10 C OR and Shadow 2 OR. Of course, the most popular models were chosen. P-10 C is a huge success of the Czech manufacturer. It surprised everyone, CZ included. For quite a long time there was not enough manufacturing power to fulfil the market needs. Optic Read means that the pistol has a specially shaped slide compatible with mini reflex sights such as Trijicon RMR, Vortex Venom, Viper and Razor, Meopta MeoRed, C-More STS2, Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Shield Minisight, Burris Fast Fire and EOTech MRDS. The slide is shaped in such a way that iron sights can still be utilized.

Another Nuremberg premieres were the .22 LR weapons and conversion kits. P-09 Kadet, P-07 Kadet, CZ 75 SP-01 Kadet and Shadow 2 Kadet are all fed by 10-round polymer magazines. Some of the dedicated .22 LR models were equipped with different iron sights.

CZ TSR sniper rifle was another Ceska Zbrojovka premiere in Nuremberg. It`s a modified variant of CZ 750 S1M1, adapted to 7,62×51 mm/.308 Winchester ammunition only. TSR has a 660 mm barrel with 280 mm / 1:11 inches twist rate. According to the manufacturer barrel`s accuracy is under 1 MOA for up to 10.00 shots. Depending on the stock`s position, weapon`s length is 969 to 1225 mm. Rifle`s height is 192 mm and it weights 6,3 kg with an empty magazine. The trigger mechanism is adjustable between 10 and 20 N. C

Z representatives informed that the sniper rifle is currently tested in Southe America by Brazillian BOPE military police unit. There is also interest from Czech Hradni Straz – a special unit of the Czech Republic armed forces responsible for president protection. The same unit also serves in ceremonial duties.

KNS Switchsight for Glock

KNS Precision, the American manufacturer of firearms accessories, presented their Switchsight prototype at IWA2018 in Nuremberg. Switchsight is a folding backup sight system for Glock pistols and when flipped-up, it raises the aiming line by 7 mm.

Switchsight was designed mostly for pistols equipped with sound suppressors, which usually obscure the stock sights. KNS Precision solution can also be used as a backup sight for weapons equipped with a red dot. When the Switchsight is flipped up, the impact point does not rise more than a few millimetres. Switchsight is made of steel but the steel type for the production version is still not decided, as the manufacturer is still testing various alloys. Versions for pistols other than Glocks are also in the pipeline, so are the tritium or fluorescent versions.

FAB’s Conversion of KPOS Scout

Israeli FAB Defense main novelty for 2018 catalogue is the Glock pistols conversion. The new product is compatible with Glock models 17,1 9, 22, 23, 25, 31, and 32, in 3rd, 4th and 5th generation. Conversion is equipped with a top Picatinny mounting rail intended for optoelectronic and iron sights. It also has the same standard lower rail which can accommodate a folding front grip or a flashlight. Side Picatinny rails and removable. Conversion assembly and disassembly can be carried out without any tools. FAB announced that the KPOS Scout will be available in future for other pistols.w.

Magpul Thermal Shield

Besides their standard offer, Magpul Industries presented in Nuremberg the prototype of a thermal shield compatible with Surefire sound suppressors. It was developed for American special forces from US SOCOM command. The prototype does not have a marketing name yet. It was designed according to US SOCOM requirement for Surefire suppressors utilized by special units. The shield is attached to the suppressor body by rings which contact the silencer in two spots only. This created an air channel which helps with heat removal. The shield is also coated with a temperature-resistant polymer. Unfortunately, the American manufacturer decided not to bring any other novelties (such as an M700 handguard) to Europe.

USB Charged Streamlight

European premiere of USB charged Streamline torches took place in Nuremberg. American manufacturer also presented the new TLR-7 and TLR-8 models for pistols. Polytac X USB and Microstream USB were shown for the first time. The Polytac X USB is a 600-lumen torch powered by 2 CR123A batteries or one 18650 rechargeable battery (included in the set), which can be recharged via the USB cable from a computer or any other power source. The same system was also introduced in ProTac 2L-X, HL-X and 5HL-X models. Microstream USB is a small torch equipped with an integrated USB socket. It has a removable belt clip and produces 250 lumens at the highest setting.

Reaper Shield Support

Advanced Accuracy Solutions from the USA presented a support system designed for ballistic shield carry. It`s called Reaper Shield Support and enables the user to comfortably carry even class IV shields for a long time. Reaper Shield Support is an evolution of Reaper system developed for firearms carry. The whole idea is based on suspending of the shield/weapon from a special arm located above the user`s head. The arm attaches to a MOLLE vest or a belt-chest rig combo and frees up the hands. The weight of the carried equipment is transferred to the wearer`s body. The Reaper Shield Support looks like a harness connected to ADA frame, backpack shoulder straps and Mystery Ranch belt. The Cordura covered arm attaches to this system. It has a square profile with a rope placed inside. The shield is then attached to the rope via a shackle. This allows for a full range of movement. Additionally, the rope pulling strength can be adjusted so the shield does not move up or down on its own. The 18 kg shield shown at the show remained static when the presenter let go of it. The shackle works as a quick release and attaching the shield isn’t difficult. The whole system can also be quickly removed by the opening of 3 buckles.

Guard Trooper Flashlights

Czech-based Eurolamp presented Guard Trooper flashlights at the Nuremberg`s IWA 2018 show. Premiered models included RX, R, and B versions which were developed for uniformed officers. These flashlights utilize 3 different light sources. Guard Trooper has a shape of a bisected cylinder. It`s made of glass-fibre reinforced nitrlone polymer. The flashlight has 3 LEDs. In the standard version, the light sources provide white, red, and UV light. Each LED has its own mode control button. The rear of the Guard Trooper had a solid, steel clip to secure the flashlight to the users clothing.

The Guard Trooper models differ in power supply, battery capacity and brightness of the main – white – LED. RX version has a Li-ion, 4600 mAh battery which is charged via a USB port. It provides 260 minutes at full brightness (400 lumens) and 18 hours in low light mode. The main LED of RX version is the CREE XM-L2 (T6). The red and UV diodes provide 80 lumens. The R model had 2300 mAh battery – this cuts the working time in half. The Guard Trooper B uses 3 of AAA batteries and can work for 65 minutes in the strongest mode and 8,5 hours when saving the energy. The UV and red LEDs` work for 430 minutes. There is no data available regarding the length of operation for the strobe or red marker mode. There is also a special-order possibility when the UV LED is replaced with the IR emitter to support night operations. Red LED can be replaced with either green or blue emitter to be used in medical applications.

Eurolamp developed their product mostly for the uniformed forces, such as the army or the police. The manufacturer claims, that the flashlights can be useful on patrol duties, when checking the authenticity of banknotes or documents or during investigations of crime scenes. Charging time is 3–4 hours. Charge indicator is located on the top of the flashlight`s body. Guard Trooper`s are durable and IP 67-water resistant. Eurolamp torches are to reach the market in the coming months and the recommended retail price will be around 100 EUR.

Kahles K525i

During the EnforceTac, Kahles debuted their K525i 5-25×56 optical scope. The scope was designed to be used for long distance shooting. K525i 5-25×56 has improved optics, strengthened tube and open correction drums. Magnification range for K525i is 5-25x. This, combined with 56 mm lens, allows for target observation at ranges of up to 1000 m. Parallax adjustment is 20 m to infinity. All K525i controls are fully ambidextrous and accessible in every shooting position. This enables the user to change settings while observing the target continuously. Austrian manufacturer used their proven solutions in the K525i construction. The parallax adjustment is integrated into the top correction drum and the controls have protection against accidental operation. The scope will be retailed with backlit 1st focal plane reticles. Besides the popular SKMR3, SKMR and MOAK reticles, Kahles offers the most recent MSR2/Ki and Mil4+ designs. Thirty-four millimetres tube allows for wide range of aiming point adjustments. For 100 m distance, adjustments can be 2,9 m in elevation and 1,3 m for windage. K525i should be available on the market from August 2018. Recommended retail price will be 3300 EUR.

Delta Optical Stryker

A line of Stryker HD scopes was presented by Delta Optical at the IWA2018 show. The line consists of 4,5-30×56 and 5-50×56 models, equipped with high-resolution glass optical elements. Smaller model, the 4,5-30×56 FFP was developed for medium and long-range firing. The reticle is placed on the first optical plane so the scope can be used in both military and sport shooting applications. Reticles available are LRD-1T, LRD-1T and DLR-1 scaled in such a way, that one click of correction drum moves the impact point by 10 mm at 100 m range. The lenses were selected to minimize the optical aberration in full range of magnification. Optical elements, combined with 34-mm tube, shortened the scope`s length. Big Stryker, the 5-50×56 SFP was developed for long range sport shooting in the F-Class and Benchrest formulas. To be competitive, the scope is equipped with DLS-1, DLS-2 and DLS-3 reticles on the second optical plane. Reticles are scaled in such a way, to allow for target measurement at the 40x full magnification. Similar to it`s younger brother, the 5-560×56 is equipped with chromatic aberration reduction lenses which also bring out the natural colours. All manipulators are adapted to gloved hand operation. The scope can also be equipped with a special accessory attachment for the parallax correction turret. This attachment allows for very precise corrections.

Swarovski Z8i

Swarovski Optik unveiled the Z8i 0,75-6×20 scope in Nuremberg. It was developed with dynamic shooting in mind and can be utilized for hunting and sports shooting. Z8i has an unusual optical system. It offers 0,75 to 6x magnification and has a Viewplus system which offers 30% increase in width, compared to normal 1x magnification. Scope`s tube is 30 mm in diameter. This solution should work well when aiming quickly at a fast-moving, close target. Clickone feature provides a very positive click when 1x magnification is reached. It`s the first scope from Swarovski to be equipped with the D-! reticle, optimized for shorter distances. The reticle has only one, backlit dot which does not cover the target. For longer distances, 4A-IF reticle model was developed. New Swarovski Z8i scope will be available from 19th of April 2018.

S&B 1-8x24 PM II

8×24 PM II Shortdot Dual CC scope was presented by Schmidt & Bender at the EnforceTac. It was created for designated marksmen and the scopes presented were manufactured for Bundeswehr in a distinctive earthen colour (RAL 8000). This batch will be used with H&K G28 Patrol designated marksman rifles. PM II Shortdot Dual CC expands upon one of the most complicated of S&B scopes and has reticles on two optical planes. The first plane has a scalable reticulum allowing for corrections in 1-8x magnification range. The second plane has a backlit aiming dot. This solution enables quick tracking of long distance targets and does not handicaps firing at closer targets. Near threats can be engaged with Close Combat (CC) system which allows the shooter to quickly aim at or beyond 7 meters with both eyes open. After the magnification is adjusted, the parallax correction changes as well. This enables the shooter to engage targets at the range of up to 100 m without additional corrections. The scope is compact. Tube`s length is only 293 mm while the weight is 655 g. This makes the scope suitable for short firearms and for limited space actions. Thirty mm tube is quick in target acquisition and enables a wide range of elevation and windage adjustments. At 100 m range, the adjustments are 1,22 m and 0,6 m respectively. Schmidt & Bender will deliver the order for 1-8×24 PM II Shortdot Dual CC scopes around the mid-year of 2018. We can estimate, that the German armed forces will receive several hundred of the said scopes together with the case covers.

According to BWA the casing remains true in size and shape even after 3 uses. Besides ammunition, BWA is developing the BWS-1 suppressor with a quick attachment/ release mechanism.

Silencer is made of mostly titanium and serves also as a compensator. Suppressors are tested according to the MIL-STD1474D norm.

Dart individual firearms simulator

Dart individual firearms simulator was presented at the EnforceTac trade show. The device was developed by American Digimation company from Florida. It`s a small, portable appliance used for firearms training and consists of an IR camera and dedicated computer. The kit also includes a pistol replica with integrated IR transmitter. Existing training weapons, such as SIRT or SimGun, can also be used. The device is connected to a multimedia projector via the HDMI cable.

European premiere of Dart took place in Nuremberg but the device itself has been available for 3 weeks. Recommended retail price is 5500 EUR and the kit includes the Dart itself, projector, a dedicated keyboard, mouse and a laser weapon. All nicely packed in a carry bag. It is also possible to purchase the Dart without the projector and gun`s replica for a lesser price.

The simulator is a standalone system for individual training. Dart can be used in small rooms (minimal size of 3,6 x 2,4 m). The minimal size of a projected image is 1,8 x 1,2 m. Projector requirements are 1024×768 pixel resolution and 2500-3000 lumens.

After switching on the device, the calibration procedure must be completed first. When the simulator is calibrated, the user can choose from different training programs. More scenarios can be downloaded from the manufacturer`s website or designed by the user. The device displays various types of targets ranging from typical shooting targets to uploaded photos.

The system presents the impact points but can also display statistics at the end of the scenario. Figures can show the number of shots fired, distance to target, time to first shot, split times, etc. During this phase, Dart will not only show the impact point but can also trace the aiming line movement during the trigger pull. The simplest scenario is a typical sports shooting training at 25 m distance. Another is for dynamic shooting at moving targets. The device can also display tactical scenarios where no-threat targets are displays and should not be shot.

ARVEY mobile energy system

ARVEY system, developed and produced by Axsol Gmbh from Obergebra, is a mobile energy storage compatible with many electricity generating devices. The prototype received Federal Award in Germany as an Outstanding Innovation and is on show at EnforceTac.

The device consists of electronic inverter/ charge controller and a Lithium-Ion battery. The system is capable of producing 1000 W of stable, clean electricity with a possibility of up to 2000 W peaks for a few seconds. Generated energy is a pure sinewave AC and the inverter can provide 230 or 115 Volts (depending on the device type). The electronics module not only controls the discharge but is also an efficient charge controller capable of accepting inputs from the source like photovoltaic cells, windmills, 12V DC charger, etc. The outputs include 230/115 V socket, 12V socket and 5 V USB port.

Standard ARVEY`s energy storage is a 24 V Li-Ion battery with 480 Wah (20.000 mAh at 24 V). The whole system weighs 11 kg and is nicely fixed together and comes with a carrying handle. The weight of the controller and a single battery is 11 kg. Interestingly, the system is ready for battery stacking and supports up to 4 batteries at the moment. This, however, would impact its mobility.

The presentation at EnforceTac is directed to Law Enforcement and Security companies with ARVEY being configured for vehicle use and equipped with a roof mounted, magnetic photovoltaic cell. System`s installation is quick with just one cable coming from the roof. If power is needed elsewhere, the battery/electronic assembly can be carried without the need to disturb the electricity generating devices.

IWA presentation focused on other uses, such as powering remote shooting ranges or off-road tourism utilization.

ARVEY can be used for various tasks, such as powering monitoring equipment in remote areas, powering medical instruments in disaster zones, recharging drones, providing observation teams with power without vehicle engine running etc. The system also seems useful and capable for private emergency preparations, off-grid living, overland vehicle travel or remote work with power tools. For the prepping purposes, ease of deployment alone makes it an interesting alternative for home-brew energy backup systems.
