Eurosatory 2024: Inertial Navigation Geonyx for Narew and Pilica+ Programs

During the Eurosatory 2024 trade fair in Paris, the Polish company Military Electronic Works and the French company Safran Electronics & Defense signed an agreement for the delivery of Geonyx inertial navigation systems for the Polish Armed Forces.

On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, during the Eurosatory 2024 trade fair in Paris, the Polish company Military Electronic Works (Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne, WZE) and the French company Safran Electronics & Defense (SED) signed an agreement for the delivery of Geonyx inertial navigation systems for the Polish Armed Forces. The agreement includes the production of approximately 200 units. The Geonyx system was selected for both the Pilica+ and Narew air defense programs, ensuring precise and reliable positioning for anti-air platforms.

The contract signing will include the transfer of production of Geonyx inertial navigation units to WZE: Safran will manufacture the main components, and WZE will carry out their assembly and necessary inspections before delivering Geonyx to the Polish user. The main goal is to shorten delivery times and ultimately ensure the maintenance of Geonyx navigation systems for the Polish army to optimize system availability rates. In a similar context, Young Poong Electronics (YPE) adapted Geonyx technology for Korean K2 Heuk-Pyo (Black Panther) tanks in the GF (Gap Filler) version for the Polish army. The agreement includes the transfer of production of their inertial units to WZE (two more deliveries of K2 tanks this year, WZE will produce and service the inertial navigation of the K2 tanks).

“I am honored to participate in signing this agreement with Safran Electronics & Defense on behalf of Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne. Establishing broad cooperation between WZE and Safran is not only about delivering modern INS systems for the Polish Armed Forces but also about the planned transfer of knowledge and technology,” said Damian Gorzelany, Acting President of WZE. He added, “I am proud of the opportunity to establish Polish-Korean cooperation with Young Poong Electronics.”

After signing of the contract, Alexandre Ziegler, Executive VP, Defense Global Business Unit of Safran Electronics & Defense, said “We are proud to participate in the defense of a European country such as Poland alongside WZE S.A. in these two strategic segments: anti-aircraft defense and armored vehicles. Thanks to our partners, we will be able to provide this inertial navigation technology resilient to jamming and spoofing of satellite navigation signals to Polish Armed Forces. Resilient Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) services are at the heart of the battlefield changes we are witnessing.

Geonyx’s hemispherical resonator gyroscope navigation technology, HRG Crystal, offers the best reliability on the market, with a mean time between failures of over one million hours, as well as durability in the most demanding environments. HRG Crystal is also independent of any external signal and is very compact. This allows Geonyx to maintain positioning and pointing accuracy even when satellite navigation signals are jammed or spoofed, while providing the best balance between size, weight, and power.
