On September 8, officers of the Internal Security Agency (ABW) detained Belarusian citizen Uladzislau N. The man had been conducting intelligence activities on the territory of Poland and Hungary. On September 9, the prosecutor presented the detainee with a charge under Article 130 § 1 of the Polish Criminal Code, namely participation in the activities of a foreign intelligence service against the Republic of Poland. On September 10, the District Court for the Capital City of Warsaw decided to apply a preventive measure in the form of three months of pre-trial detention.
The investigation, conducted by the Internal Security Agency (ABW) under the supervision of the Mazovian Division of the Department for Organized Crime and Corruption of the National Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw, is ongoing.
At the same time, on September 9, at the request of the Head of the ABW, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland revoked the diplomatic accreditation and requested the departure from Poland of a diplomat of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Warsaw. The individual in question had been engaged in intelligence activities on the territory of Poland and demonstrated a stance supportive of the policies of the Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko. The revocation of accreditation is directly related to the earlier detention of the Belarusian citizen.
This case highlights the importance and validity of international cooperation among European intelligence services in combating espionage threats.
