“Polish Border Guard officers were attacked in Tbilisi, Georgia. As a result of the incident, two of them sustained serious head injuries and were taken to a hospital, where they underwent surgery. They remain under medical and consular care, and a Border Guard liaison officer is present on site.
The circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the local police.
The officers were in Tbilisi during a layover on their way back to Poland after completing a return operation, during which Georgian and Pakistani nationals were forcibly returned,” the Border Guard said in a social media statement.
A day earlier, it was reported that the 11th return operation of the year had been organized by officers from the Foreigners Division of the Polish Border Guard Headquarters, in cooperation with Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency. The charter flight, which departed from Radom on October 7, carried nine Pakistani and ten Georgian nationals who were forcibly removed from Poland.
The main reason for issuing return decisions against the Georgian citizens was public security and order concerns – nine of them had criminal convictions in Poland. The Pakistani nationals were deported due to lack of legal residence documents and illegal border crossing from Belarus.
The latest return operation was carried out using a charter flight, with escort provided by officers from the Operational Security Division and other Border Guard units. Since the beginning of the year, over 7,000 foreign nationals have left Poland either voluntarily or under compulsion.
