During the AUSA Global Force Symposium and Exposition held at the Von Braun Convention Center in Huntsville, Alabama, from March 25 to 27, 2025, the American company AM General presented a next-generation concept of the M1000 HMMWV (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle), named the Future Driven HUMVEE. The vehicle was showcased at exhibit booth No. 1120.
The premiere took place to mark the 40th anniversary of the HMMWV vehicles entering service with the U.S. Army, which falls this year. These vehicles are still in use today but will eventually be replaced by the heavier Oshkosh/AM General JLTV (Joint Light Tactical Vehicle), also known as the L-ATV (Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle).
As AM General emphasizes in its press release, the design of the Future Driven HUMVEE focused on passenger ergonomics and safety, improved vehicle mobility, and increased capabilities for multiple missions to build upon the next 40 years.
“The Future Driven HUMVEE™ concept encapsulates the company’s innovative spirit and our understanding that continuous improvement isn’t just a cliché,” said Jim Cannon, AM General President and CEO. “We’re excited for our customers to see our vision for how we will improve the Warfighter’s safety with a cutting-edge restraint system and increase the vehicle’s capabilities for mission success!”
At the exhibition, a command variant of the HUMVEE 4-CT was showcased, equipped with safety systems from IMMI Inc., including the MARS passenger protection system (featuring MBrace and RollTek) designed for military vehicles. Additionally, the vehicle is fitted with a Kongsberg Protector SR4 remote weapon station, mounted on the cabin roof and armed with both a 12.7 mm and a 7.62 mm machine gun. It also features the DedroneOnTheMove soft-kill counter-drone system from Axon, mounted on a mast at the rear of the vehicle.
It is worth recalling that at the Eurosatory 2018 defense expo in Paris, AM General had already presented another concept for a successor to the M1000 HMMWV vehicles, designated NXT 360. While no technical details have been disclosed for the Future Driven HUMVEE — such as drivetrain, suspension, performance, or ballistic and mine protection parameters — its styling appears to more closely resemble the original HMMWV generation compared to the NXT 360.
It is known that the Future Driven HUMVEE received a redesigned hood to improve airflow to the engine, regulate temperature, and prevent overheating in extreme conditions. The suspension travel — both rebound and compression — has been increased, and new shock absorbers and springs have been introduced. The vehicle also features increased power and torque for better acceleration and performance, reduced engine noise, and improved fuel efficiency, resulting in an extended driving range.
The company is also developing other concepts, although they were not showcased in physical form at the AUSA exhibition — including a command-and-control vehicle for unmanned systems, a mobile command center, and a hybrid diesel-electric HUMVEE Charge. AM General is also investing in autonomous driving technologies and semi-active suspension systems.
