On Monday, March 10, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on social media that a Naval Missile Brigade will be established based on the Naval Missile Unit (MJR) of the 3rd Ship Flotilla in Siemirowice. The brigade will be armed with the NSM-CDS (Naval Strike Missile-Coastal Defence System).

“A Naval Missile Brigade will be established – the appropriate concept for its creation has already been signed. The brigade will be formed based on the Naval Missile Unit and will become the third tactical formation of the Polish Navy. This is another step in enhancing Poland’s security in the Baltic Sea region!” wrote the Minister of National Defense on the social media platform X.
Currently, the Polish Navy consists of two tactical formations: the 3rd Ship Flotilla, named after Cmdr. Bolesław Romanowski in Gdynia, and the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, named after Vice Adm. Kazimierz Porębski in Świnoujście.
The expansion of the structure is a result of the agreement signed on September 5, 2023, by the then Minister of National Defense, Mariusz Błaszczak, on the first day of the 31st International Defense Industry Exhibition (MSPO) at Targi Kielce, regarding the acquisition of two additional Naval Missile Units.
The agreement, signed between the Polish State Treasury – Armament Agency and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, covers the delivery of Naval Strike Missile (NSM) system components for two Naval Missile Units, including command vehicles, launchers, and several hundred NSM anti-ship missiles. The total value of the order is approximately 8 billion PLN gross, with deliveries scheduled for 2026-2032.
Regarding the Location of the Future Naval Missile Brigade, it is worth noting that on July 31, 2024, Senator Stanisław Gawłowski submitted an inquiry during the 18th session of the Senate to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz:
“The statement concerns the inactive military airfield in Zegrze Pomorskie. During the previous term, the PiS government led to the closure of the airstrip that was located there, displacing two active aeroclubs. Today, this area, which includes a nearly 3-kilometer-long concrete runway and the site of a former military unit from years ago, is no longer used for aviation purposes.
Therefore, I request the restoration of access to this area for the aeroclubs that previously operated there and urge the Minister of National Defense to take appropriate actions in this matter. Civilian pilots could also be utilized if the need arises.”
In response, on August 30, 2024, Deputy Minister of National Defense Paweł Bejda stated that: “According to the development plans of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland, the aforementioned location is planned to host a Naval Missile Unit, a base for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), subunits of the 8th Air Defense Regiment, elements of the Air Force Training Center (training squadron), and the construction of a combat equipment depot. To ensure the proper utilization of the facility by the UAV base, the restoration of the airfield function of the complex is planned.”
For now, the exact location of the third Naval Missile Unit remains uncertain.
