On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, Paweł Bejda, Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defense, responsible for overseeing the technical modernization of the Polish Armed Forces, announced that the Swedish company Saab Defence and Security had delivered the AUV 62-AT autonomous training system for anti-submarine warfare, ordered by the Armament Agency.
“At the end of the year, the Armament Agency received the AUV 62-AT system ordered for the Polish Navy – it is an underwater drone used to practice anti-submarine scenarios. From now on, we can improve the skills of our sailors and naval aviators even more” – wrote Paweł Bejda on his profile on the social network X.
A contract worth approximately 70 million SEK net (29.96 million PLN net / 36.85 million PLN gross) between the State Treasury – Armament Agency and Saab Dynamics AB (a part of Saab Defence and Security) was signed on December 16, 2022. The delivery was scheduled for 2024.
The AUV 62-AT system is designed for advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) training, and its acquisition will enhance the training capabilities of personnel responsible for this area within the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland.
The autonomous AUV 62-AT training system enables the execution of advanced training scenarios for ASW naval forces and maritime aviation without the need for a submarine. This capability is crucial for meeting the training needs of the Polish Navy, particularly in connection with the acquisition of AW101 maritime helicopters and the Miecznik-class multi-role frigates.
The core component of the system is an autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle designed to simulate the physical fields generated by submarines. Notably, training conducted with the AUV 62-AT system allows for a high level of realism in planning and analyzing ASW exercises while maintaining low costs. The detailed specifications of the system remain classified.
The AUV 62-AT system is also used by other NATO members, including the United States and the United Kingdom, and is currently the most advanced solution available on the market.
