The main elements of the first High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), which will enter the service of the Romanian Armed Forces, arrived into in country on 20th February, in Constanța Harbor.

The elements of the HIMARS system were subsequently transported to the 81st Tactical Operative Missile Battalion ‘Maior Gheorghe Șonțu” from Focșani, the first unit of Romanian Land Forces that will operate this system. Over the next period a series of acceptance and reception tests will be conducted. They will be executed within the battalion headquarters.

On February 26th 2018 Romanian authorities signed the Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for procurement of the first three HIMARS missile systems through the US Foreign Military Sales Program.

The acquisition program was run according to the approval of the Romanian Parliament, under a state contract awarded by the Government of Romania to the Government of the United States of America.

Romanian authorities explained the acquisition of the HIMARS missile system as an essential security interest for Romania, which will strengthen the national and regional security.
