The military is still battling the aftermath of the floods in Poland

In the areas affected by the floods since September 23 of this year, the largest military operation since 1989, codenamed Phoenix (Operacja Feniks in Polish), is underway, involving, among others, soldiers from the Territorial Defense Forces.

As of October 4 of this year, 13,254 soldiers are involved in Operation Phoenix, including 2,445 soldiers from the Territorial Defence Forces (WOT). Their activities aim to mitigate the effects of the flood, accelerate the rebuilding of infrastructure, reduce the risk of future local floods, and enhance the safety of the population.

At this moment, military efforts are focused on reinforcing and repairing flood embankments in Gryfino, Zatoń, Raduszec Stary, Czerna, Wilków, and Żelazno, as well as conducting cleanup operations in flooded areas, primarily in buildings and public spaces. The Territorial Defence Forces, together with Engineering Troops, are rebuilding flood defenses, clearing roads and towns devastated by debris and waste brought by the floodwaters, and clearing culverts under the roads.

Soldiers are still assisting in the distribution of water and food to people affected by the disaster. Since the beginning of the operation, approximately 44,800 meals have been provided to residents in need. Territorial Defense Forces soldiers are also helping in distribution hubs, sorting donations from donors, and then, after loading them onto trucks, delivering the supplies to the areas where they are most needed.

On Wednesday, October 2 of this year, a reconnaissance was conducted by task forces from allied countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and the USA. As a result of the reconnaissance, partner units were designated for the allied forces, and the scope of cooperation in rebuilding infrastructure in the flood-affected areas was established. The allied armies proposed support capabilities such as the construction of a temporary bridge to restore transportation links, clearing transport and communication routes, strengthening flood defenses, and providing crisis response training as a long-term solution.
